In this case, the hype is justified. I got to look at a cross sectional display of the DB at Interbike. The way that shock is designed is very, very smart. And like someone said Ohlins actually designed the shock for Cane Creek. Cane Creek just manufacturers the parts and hand assembles the shock. You can drop the spring rate that you use drastically cause the dampening control of the shock is so good. I know people on Morewoods running 200-250 lb springs.

Some interesting things about the DB. All valving is done external of the main shock body. The shock body is a dual tube design. The piston on the end of the shaft has no valves within it, it only pushes fluid back and forth. Hence the shaft diameter is very small (take a look at one, looks like the size of a pencil) this allows the use of really small seals (low seal friction). There is low speed and high speed adjustments on both compression and rebound with pop-it valves on the low speed adjustments. The valving can be customized for the application by some basic machining of the internal parts. To change the valving of the shock you also do not have to disassemble the entire shock - valving comes right out of the "double barrels".

From an engineering perspective, it is a very efficient and well thought out design. It doesn't use any "fancy" technology (such as SPV and all those other complex valving designs we have seen) to achieve it's great ride quality, the parts will last a very, very long time.

That said a Fox DHX is very good as well. Not nearly the caliber of the Double Barrell but the DB is also extremely expensive.

There is shim stack in the CCDB, they put it in there to help idiot proof the shock.

Since Taz had to save this hi-jacked thread I will add some feedback since I have been using the Double Barrel for almost 3 years.

As soon as the CCDB was released I jumped don board, I liked what I read about and the concept made sense.
I used a 9.5X3.0 for 2006 and 2007 on my DH bike and never had a single problem. For the first time ever I was able to adjust the shock for the kind of riding and racing that I was doing at the time. All of the adjustments WORK and do not affect the others. My favorite part of this the dual rebound, I can run my low speed(LS) rebound pretty quick to keep the bike active, flick able and smooth on small roots, rocks, ect. While at the time I keep the High Speed(HS) rebound slower to help me recover from large drops or fast square edge hits.

The same goes for the compression side of the shock. Everything can be adjusted to suit the riding conditions you are going to encounter that day. lots of LS compression for a smooth pedally course, a bit less if it is rough. And like Taz said, the HS compression can make up for a softer spring rate. I was running over 40% sag on my DH bike in 06 and 07 and never had a harsh bottom out.

Right now I have a 10.5X3.5 CCDB on my M6 that is nothing less than awesome but I ordered a 400lb spring and I need a 350, I am just getting 30% sag with the 400 and would like more.

Hope that helped. Now I will go and post some gay and useless stuff for a week.

Kinda off topic but since the RS Vivid has beginning and end stroke rebound I feel it can be somewhat related... My question is do you think that the Vivid will effect the spring rate at all? I'd like to scoop one up for my Izimu DH next year. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
