Whiteface 3rd Annual 5 K Downhill on 8-31-08
Our big race:
The 3rd Annual Whiteface 5 K Downhill will be on Sunday August 31st.
Last years winning time was a super fast 7:36.2 by Derrick Nobman. Competetition was amazing with Morewoods Gerritt Beytagh taking 2nd place with a time of 7:36.7 (1/2 second slower!).

The race course:
Whiteface is a huge mountain and to make it down in under 8 minutes you need pro level speed. This course starts off on a crazy speed section where racers will approach speeds well over 40 mph. After the speed section you have a very challenging traverse across a couple of very steep black diamond ski trails. Now you enter the single-track with approx 1,800 feet of vertical to go. This section of single-track is approx. 850 feet of vertical and very challenging. Steep with non stop naturally challenging moves needed to make it to mid lodge. Now you have another speed section to some easier single-track, to the wood chips. Once you are on the wood chips you have 1 more speed section on a ski trail that is also very fast! After this speed section you enter trail # 11. Trail # 11 is awesome single-track that experts and up can pin with no brakes at all. Just a quick couple of hundred yard sprint to the finish and you done.

Registration: http://www.active.com/page/Event_Details.htm?event_id=1614768&assetId=29e42b44-8c8f-4d1c-9d73-003b4504159d
We will be using Active.com for registration this year. We will also have registration set up at the mountain 1 week before the event. This will be a U.S.A.Cycling sanctioned event and a U.S.A.C. or U.C.I. license will be required to race. Online registration will be ready by 8-7-08.

Cash purse and prizes:
There will be a $5,000.00 cash purse for pro racers and awesome prizes for the 1st 3 places in all amateur categories.
Here is a quick break down of the pro pay out:

Men's 1st place: $1,225.00
Womens' 1st place: $1,225.00
Men's 2nd place: $500.00
Women's 2nd place: $500.00
Men's 3rd place: $250.00
Women's 3rd place $250.00
Mens pro will be paid 10 deep with 10th place winning back approx. registration and lift fees.

Yep we pay the women the same as the men as their equipment and travel expenses are the same!

We may put this new jump near the finish line?

Registration is filling up nicely with out of state downhillers. Anyone from N.Y. racing? Haha

We are also thinking about changing the course. More single-track and a longer race course. 10 minutes?
Maybe lowering the chainless category to a super cheap registration like $5.00 just to fill it up. In order to race chainless for $5.00 you must be registered in another category.

We are also considering having 1 course for pro, expert and sport. And another course for beginners.

All the above will be officially announced this week. We are trying to get a few things approved, but expect a couple of nice jumps you can hit at speed.

The $5.00 chainless category is a go!
* New race course (Trail 23 to 24). 24 is The Old Downhill.
* New line cut in single-track # 22 making the trail flow better
* Teams can set up their tents on the lawn near the finish line (email me 1st please)
* Beginners will start at mid and use the same lower course as the pros, experts and sport racers
* More jumps
* Longer course with more single-track and possibly faster times? Trail 24 is faster than trail 27 used in the last 2 races. Not quite as steep as trail 27 but plenty challenging. Trail 24 from top to bottom is a very fast flowy run entirely in the woods. Maybe 1100+ of vertical just on trail 24! Sick!

Can't wait for this weekend. Whiteface and Labor day weekend, NICE ! Downhill Mike, couple of questions. Does registration include practice Sat ? Why does practice start so late? 1 1/2 hours for practice? Seems tough on that long of a course. In all seriousness, my experience with the resorts that are allowing you MAYBE two practice runs is bullshit !! Mike I know you guys put a lot of effort into your mountain I hope this would be considered. THX for all your efforts and look forward to this coming weekend Mr. Green

* Lift passes must be purchased to ride the gondola.
* Lift passes are $32.00 per day or $60.00 for a 2 day.
* Best deal is the bike n stay. Stay 2 nights at $69.00 to $89.00 per night and that includes your lift pass for Saturday and for Sunday.
* Registration is $28.00 online or $35.00 at the mountain.
* The lifts do not open until 10:00 am and that is when practice starts.
* We need to give all racers enough time to practice.
* Extra cabins will be used for the gondola and they will run it a bit faster like they do in the winter to get everyone up as fast as possible. 8 to 10 minutes per ride. From 10:00 am until 11:45 you can get at least 3 practice runs on Sunday.
* Whiteface is huge and 3 practice runs on race day may be more than most want?

Some things can still be changed so please don't be shy and let us know what your ideas are as we want to make as many racers happy as possible.

DHM

P.S. The race course is open now for practice.

For your total to be $86.00 you would need to be a member of Active.com to get their $2.00 discount.
If not it will be $28.00 to register online + a small fee they charge, usually 2 or 3 bucks.
Then you would need your annual usac license or a 1 day license.

If you do not have a usac license we will be selling them at the mountain, as a usac license is required to race. Cost is $60.00 for adults and $30.00 for 10-18 or college students.

If you wish to purchase a 1 day permit from us instead of an annual usac license it will be only $5.00 extra.

Example 1) non active member registers $28.00
2 day lift ticket $60.00
1 day usac license $5.00
Total = $93.00

Example 2) register at the mountain $35.00
2 day lift ticket $60.00
already have a license $.0.00
Total = $95.00

The best deal is one of our bike n stay packages.
For $69.00 to $89.00 you get a nice motel room and your lift ticket needed for the day. At the bike n stay in Lake Placid you also get a hot breakfast. Stay 2 nights you get 2 lift tickets valued at $60.00. Then all you need is registration for $28.00 or $35.00. And the $5.00 1 day license if you do not have an annual license and are racing beginner or sport.
Note. To race expert or pro you need to have an annual license and move up through the ranks in usac.

For those of you that read the article in Decline about last years race; I already spoke with Centerplate (Whiteface's concessionaire) about beer. They will have beer at the race this year. I have reminded them earlier today and will do so again tomorrow. We will have beer!
