Hayes Hydraulic Disc Brakes-fade, poor stopping power

I can't even lock up the rear wheel with my Hayes. I have a few years on them and new pads in about a month ago (I believe I bedded them properly). Any ideas? Old DOT fluid maybe? Heard it traps moisture after awhile. Any help would be great. Thanks,

AND you have new pads --
Sounds like glazing or contamination.
Clean the discs with simple green and then scuff them u p with emery cloth or fine sand paper.
Might as well scuff up the pads too!
Center thos beetches, and go hit some runs and do MEDIUM to HARD stopping - longer pulls progressive squeeze.
Dont do the haul ass and grab a pile of break OR the drag brake forever method.
Hayes should have very good power so something is up.

dot fluid (unless its 5 or 5.1 or something, i cant remember) once opened and not used should be discarded ... it traps moisture that quick. it doesnt take more than a few days to ruin it.

Yeah.. but somewhat true.
ALL brake fluid, except for silicone brake fluid (i.e. all glycol based fluids), absorb moisture and should be discarded if left open. If you keep a very tight seal on the bottle after it is opened and don't leave it lying around over night you can re-use it. But any fluid left opened should not be used. It is designed to absorb moisture in a brake system to keep the system from corroding.

they way i see it you guys are way too tech,
1. it does not say that on brake fluid bottle to dischard one opened and left unused overnight.
2. i used opened brake fluid for my bike, for my dirt bike and for my car and never had any problems like the guy has, all works normal.
that's how i see it as crock.

ive used brake fluid also thats over a couple years old and was left in the bottle. ive never had any problems with my bike's brakes or any vehicle ive put them in.
Although there is the fact that brake fluid absorbs moisture 3x faster when its heated to more than 195f. DOT 5 fluid wont have that problem, but Hayes does not recommend using any pertoleum based fluids since it will allegedy swell the pads.

Lever feel seems pretty damn good so I'm going to try Huck_Banzai's ideas about removing any glazing. Thanks for the help.

If you ever buy a high end brake fluid (say Motul 5.1) it comes sealed and slightly pressurized with nitrogen to keep it from absorbing moisture while it sits on the shelf.

As long as you keep the bottles sealed it has a long shelf life, but at some point I throw them away cause they have absorbed moisture from opening the bottles numerous times.
DOT 5 is not petro based. It's silicone based and expensive, but not as good as DOT 3/4/5.1

I've had problems with the Hayes brakes with the newer G2 calipers.
but the older G1 calipers have always worked really well for me.
Try changing the brakeline...sometimes they leak from the inside out.

So I sanded/scuffed up the rotors (both sides) nice nice with a fine grip sand paper...I forget the grit #...that stuff that looks like a gray piece of paper. I also did the pads....put everything back together. Headed up to Highland Mt. Bike Park in NH and did a few runs. Brakes worked perfect...just like they used to be...good stopping power! Thanks for the help. Jeff

Hayes brakes just suck that is your problem.
Buy some other brand and ride happy with better feel and power.
I am the unlucky owner of Hayes on my new trail bike and I HATE them! They will be the first thing going for almost free on ebay or the trash heap. Replaced with some nice juicy 5's or 7's if I feel like spending extra $$$ to look cool.
