Can anyone tell me what the smallest size chainring that will work on the Sunday?

I specifically want to know if I can run something in the 32-36t range.

I called Ironhorse today and the guy I spoke to was of very little help.

You can run just about any size. You just need to buy a chainguide that will work with the range you want. E.13 makes them(very nice)

I already have an Evil STS guide.

Are you sure there will be NO chain clearance issues with a small diameter chainring like a 32t?

For how I am planning on using the frame it would really suck for me if I have to run a 38t or larger chainring to have proper chain clearance.

You should be fine, take a look at the 7.x's. Assuming thier linkage works basically the same as the sunday's, they have as much chain clearance as the sunday does in pics. The sunday comes stock with a 40t while the 7.x's come with 36/24, so you should be fine. On the other hand, why are you using such a small ring in the front anyways? If you are planning on doing "freeriding" and want that smaller ring or just like it for eastcoast style riding, then just go with a 7.x. The extra two inches of travel you get with the sunday is not going to make all that much difference, and the weight saving will definatley help. You may just want to let that sink in and reconsider your choice of bikes.

I am looking for a DH bike that I can also trail ride when I get the urge. I figure if I can use a smaller chainring I will be able to ride it just about anywhere since there are very small hills in FL.

The 7point probably makes more sense but to be truthful I REALLY hate the looks of the frame. No matter how perfect it would be I just don't like it.

What I am looking for is a DH bike that will kill it down the mountain but won't kill me any more than my 41lb Bullit will on the local trails.

So far the Sunday seems like it might fit the bill.

To be quite honest, the Sunday is going to kill you just about as badly as a 41lb bullit. It will probably weigh in at just about 40lbs as well. You really should consider something more along the lines of the 7.x, even if you go with another company because "you don't like how the 7.x looks". In the long run you'll be saving a good deal of money and you'll be happier and ride better. And not to bust on Floridians, but in a state where the average vertical gain for trails is 30ft (dirtworld.com trail reviews) you don't need a dh bike unless the 30ft consist of a 30ft uphill climb followed by a 10ft drop and 20ft near vertical chute. Go with a 5-7" travel bike, you'll be way happier.

I recommend a Medium travel C-dale Gemini. Exactly the bike to do what you want.

I will give you more input on why I am looking to get a Sunday.

I got my first taste of real DH this summer at Snowshoe. I had a blast and I am hooked forever. I am going to try to plan multiple trips for 2005 to places like Snowshoe, Diablo, and Windrock.

I found riding at Snowshoe my bike did fine, but while I have my Bullit set up as much DH ready as possible, I feel I would be more comfortable riding a bike designed specifically for that type of riding. I could feel the limitations of the geometry of the Bullit. The tall BB stood out the most. I also felt the suspension of the frame was a limitation in how comfortable I was able to ride. I couldn't get it set up like I am sure a pure DH rig is capable of.

I also plan to enter a DH race or two if funds and scheduling permit.

I already have a 5.5" trailbike so having a full on DH rig won't be a big deal for me even in FL. It won't be my only bike and as long as I can set up the gearing low enough, I don't mind grunting around on a heavy bike every now and then. I don't want to get a frame where I HAVE to use a 38T or larger due to suspension design. Sometimes I just like riding the big bike even if I am pulling up the end of the ride.

After checking out the geometry and prices of the other DH frames available the Sunday comes the closest to be able to do what I ask of it. It has a long seat post insertion length, seat tube angle is acceptable, has a 11lb or under frame weight, low BB, and seems like it would be the most trail friendly of the DH frames currently available.

Another big plus is I can score one for a very impressive price. Wink

Are there any other DH frames you guys can recommend that will do what I am looking for Question

I run a 46 lb bafla 2 step DH with a 36t chain ring as my main bike, i ride up hills and down i even beat XC riders up the hills , i'm putting a 38t on for this season. pushing a larger gear makes up stronger, i live in eastern mass so we have just a little more hills than Fl.(not much more) you will be fine with a 36t

a 36t is the smallest that you can run on a sunday (according to DW). don't forget to take into effect the different geometry from the bullit, the sunday is a full-on DH race bike. slack and low, and made for going really really fast. its definitely going to feel different from your bullit, its going to be faster on the downhills but not going to be as easy to get it around as a FR bike. the 7. is able to be pedaled much more easily on the flats/uphills, and its only shortcomings are at very high rates of speed on DH runs. hope this helps.

You need an ISCG 05 compatible guide. E-13 is the only company I know of making one right now.

If you have already have an E-13/Evil guide you can buy a new backplate.
