Repeat after me: I am special, I can do no wrong. Whatever it is, it's someone else's fault. (A lesson my wife "got" while teaching from some of her college students, no less... )
...and back on topic, Frank the Welder posted this at the Sinister site on racing tips at Platty. So I thought I'd share (as sharing is caring):
-----------------------------------------------------------
Here are some platte tips, like all free ****, keep what you can use, discard the rest.. good luck!
the Platte course is usually pretty "raw" at the beginning of the weekend. I don't worry about anything but learning the trail, often early on, some tape will get ripped out. It's good to stop when you see the trail boss near any turns in question and find out what lines will be open and which will be taped off. You don't want to ride up to find big X across your race line. open on Saturday does not mean open on sunday.
I do practice runs once out of each three runs I take saturday. The course will be getting faster as the day progresses and I don't want to be "programmed" at the slower speed. About an hour before the lift closes walk the course from Bottom to top. I do this for two reasons, the first is I don't really want to look at what I am going to be riding off. Too scary. the second reason is ninja lines.
depending on the trail, I will develop perhaps as many as five ninja lines. I want to see any I have missed and for some reason they are easier to see in "reverse" You can sight up the trail and see where you have come from. I usually walk the course by myself so I can stay focused on my task.
Platte usually only tapes "critical" sections. the rest is open for interpretation (wink, wink)
Sunday, I just roll the trail trying to pump most of it and identify any flow or speed potential I missed earlier. I develop mental "pit stops" where I will focus on lowering my heart rate. I don't actually stop, just concentrate on a two second mental rest. while on this topic, don't stop on the race trail on sunday unless you flat or fall. Your homework should be done (unless you missed something) . I gradually work up my speed till I have a flawless, fast run. Then I stop till my sight run (right before the lift closes for the race)
sometime during the weekend, I stash a gallon of water, three asprin (thins blood to help heart accelerate faster) an extra pair of gloves and a large trash bag at the top of the hill. While waiting for the race to begin, you don't want to get wet or cold or dehydrated.
the timer starts when you pass through the gate, so you want to hit the gate going as fast as you can so back up to the end of the launch deck. If someone has already pulled up behind you give their tire a good push back with your foot and tell them to stay back till you are gone. The starter guy is super cool and loves to chat so stay focused.
If it starts to rain after practice and before the race, you will be able to ride much faster than during practice because the rocks will be clean. Watch newly exposed roots, the "white" parts are like greased steel so don't put either tire on them. Everyone goes the same speed through the "key" sections (where specs are or jumps or whatever) free speed is available all the way down the trail so don't focus on sections or objects. I picture myself as a car wheel rolling down a big hill, I need to make slight adjustments long before I have a big problem. In other words, make your gear changes correctly, nail your lines and ride like you planned. Don't flail. things will change, but thats part of the plan!
One thing with Platte, there will be slow sections. While it's popular to jump and blast around corners at places where the trails are like BMX tracks, platte isn't like that. You must be able to pedal on off cambers at 4mph. This is your advantage. The rougher the better. Bikes with 11" BB heights get tangled in that stuff so keep your feet on the pedals and get through that stuff clean.
Remember, you can't ride any faster than you know how so don't try to. you can sure mess things up though. have fun!
Anybody up there that can give me a report? I have been holding off until the last minute and am still up in the air about going... Forecast says rain tonight with a break and then some more tomm, I'd say right as pros go off...
