Very Happy Whiteface, NY: not an actual city, but a mountain bike park complete with rock drops, jumps, and other challenges for the experienced mountain biker. It was on a cool day in July when I stepped out of the van in search of epic mountain biking. Downhill mountain biking is a blast. I liked the people, trails, and the rental bike.
The people that ran the park were really friendly. Everyone was jokin’ around and just having a good time. Mike and Elias were awesome. Elias fixed my bike when I broke it, and then Mike hooked me up with a bike that actually fit me. You can’t say that about Wal-mart. These guys know what they are doing. They are really helpful and know the trails well. If you want to have some fun, and hang out with cool people, go to Whiteface.
Trails on Whiteface are the real deal for advanced cross country riders, downhill racers, and mountain bikers that want to go downhill and be challenged. The trails at the top curve a lot as they plunge off the mountain. I loved the technicalities and yelled Wahoo! It was cool to shoot down the root infested, snakelike trails on the bike. It took the trail and shook it up like a bear to a fuzzy bunny. As I descended down the slippery slope, I hit a patch of eel-like roots. I flippered up and out 3 feet, landing squarely on my shoulder, rolled and came to a stop. I hope they build more ramps, berms, and drops into the trails on the mountain, because this mountain is so awesome already that with its huge vertical, it could be the ultimate dh/freeride arena. All that is needed is a couple 5, 10, and 15-20 foot drops for the maniacs. Technical is great but most mountain bikers I know want to get air, and I certainly did. Going down the lower trails, I got to hit a sizable drop-off. I fell a couple feet out onto a road. I almost landed it, but washed out the front wheel and bit the dirt. Dumb me. As I rode down the mountain, I noticed that the road surface was filled with loose, and when I say loose, I mean LOOSE, rock. Keeping the bike upright was deliriously fun. Don't think you can ride here and not crash. If you don't crash at least once, you're going too SLOW. Don’t worry; the rental bikes at Whiteface can handle the abuse.
I rode the Specialized BigHit, a bike with 5 inches of front and rear suspension. I loved the way it soaked up the bumps in the trail as I rode down. The disc brakes with eight inch rotors were a great attribute to the bike’s braking. Other riders with only rim brakes went careening around corners at dangerous speeds because there brakes were not slowing them enough, but I could actually stop! Oh, yeah, the bike looked pretty cool too.
My brain was fried. After 1.5 hours of downhill riding, I was stoked. It was so awesome, dude; believe in the art of Whiteface. Overall, these are the best trails I have ridden-period.

P.S. (I haven’t ridden at Plattekill, but if you ride there, go on up to Whiteface and check it out! Whiteface is the place that got me stoked on dh and road trips are always fun
