you start out on trail # 23 from the top of the gondola [it's the sercice rd. or the ski trail exelsior],some loose rocks to keep it interesting but very fast.a 90 degree right followed by a left onto a straight away on a very fast and technical ski trail to the singletrack [a quick 1/2 mile or so]. that's where you pick up upper trail # 24 . adirondack technical and steep. this part of 24 is very flowy and much straighter than the other end with all of the switchbacks. also this is part of the old downhill course.
across a ski trail for a quick 100 yards and continuing on # 24 with 2 new jumps in the still somewhat straight very technical singletrack. a 90 degree left and your on the lower part of trail # 26. some technical moves and your out of the singletrack to a fast service rd with a few fun and sketchy turns to trail # 25. [just above the facelift chairlift used in the winter]. now you enter trail # 25. [this is one i wanted to change the name to "it flows"]. killer singletrack that spits you out in front of mid lodge. STILL 880 VERTICAL FEET TO GO. this is where the new jump is at mid. riders will come out of the singletrack bombing down towards mid to catch some nice air off the headwall just below mid. turning right afterwards, picking up speed on a ski trail # 4 to a nice left turn [we'll build a berm here for the race course] into the singletrack trail # 22. short but sweet. across a ski trail for 50 yards or so and now you turn hard left onto trail # 5 [stag brook junction] . this trail is so steep with like 5 really unbelievablely hard turns one right after the next, with no room for error, especially when jumping over the pipe. a fast traverse across a ski trail and now you cross the stream by the waterfall. [ another great place to view from. a hiking trail from the base area leads right to that spot for viewing and just a killer place to be]. now the grade eases a bit [ still all singletrack]and you bomb down trail # 13. when you can see the base lodge we will build another jump on the sevice rd. the course will finish on. for the race we want to build a jump on the road so everyone from the barbecue deck can see the finish with a nice jump.
this is mostly singletrack the whole way down. i'll have some riders time it this weekend, but i'm guessing times will vary between 10 to 20+ minutes.
i still must get this approved. but all this exists now except the jump at the bottom. but we did just build a new hip jump and a cool box to jump off of at the skills course.

Thats sounds like a blast. I would love to see such a long race, as I am weary of the you blink you lose type we have here in Ontario... It would be totally cool if you could make this happen. Keep me posted

nothing definite yet but we timed the beginner race course and the sport, expert and pro course today.
elias made it down the pro course in 12 minutes.
i took it easy on the beginner course to estimate a time and it took me 8 minutes.
the beginner course will start from the top of the facelift chair. 1,500 vertical of singletrack, and fast open ski runs. it was the 1st time i rode those trails in that order and it was way fun. i'm guessing winning times on the beginner course at around 6 minutes and around 10 minutes for the other course from the summit of little whiteface for a full 2500 vertical. way technical and long. yeah!
keep your fingers crossed for the race and i should know by early next week.
see ya at the face

here is the new proposed race courses and race day plans for the downhill race on 9-4-05.
we are still waiting for final approval. once we get the o.k. times, classes and registration information will be posted on www.highpeaksma.com and also www.whiteface.com.
if we get more than 100 racers we'll just race on saturday and sunday. 1 racer every 3 minutes on a 20+ minute course would be 6 riders on the course at once. that would also take approx. 5+ hours. 10:00 am till 3:00. something like that.
it would be great to have 2 full days of races and still have the friday to ride the courses. maybe we'll just split it into 2 days to have a couple of hours before the race too.
please let me know if you have any different ideas. someone said something about having a hardtail class and we are having one now.
upon final approval a film and party will be next.

Race Course Layout
H.P.C. staff will layout and mark two race courses on Tuesday August 30th. The pro/expert course will start at the summit of Little Whiteface and proceed down Approach Ski Trail to Bike Trail #27, staying biker’s right all the way down to the service road (just below Tower #10 Hill). The trail turns left for a short way on the service road to Bike Trail #12 and continues to the finish line at the base area. The sport/beginner course will start from the top of the Facelift Chair and proceed down Bike Trail #25 (between Easy Street and Broadway ski trails). Exiting Bike Trail #25, the course proceeds on Bike Trail #9, passing to the left of mid lodge and then across the top of the Nastar start gate. Continuing on Bike Trail #9 to the service road, the course turns right on Bike Trail #11. Both pro/expert and sport/beginner courses merge at the bottom of Bike Trail #12 to a shared finish line at the base area, allowing spectators to view all class finishes from the base or the upper deck.
Logistics
The pro/expert race will be conducted first. After the last racer has finished, the trails used for the pro/expert course will be re-opened for the public. Once the racecourse monitors have re-positioned, the sport/beginner class will commence.

Beginner course is pretty much wide open grassy ski trails that can be scary if you take em wide open or not too bad if you ride the breaks. the rest of the beginner course is average single track, not bad at all.
there is a ton of camping/hotels in the area. right across the street is a koa that sits walkign distance from a swimming hole.
you could easiily just drive to whtieface and then find a hotel at night, i think there are something like space for 10k+ hotel guests in lake placid. the town itself is only 3500 pop, if that puts things in perspective.
Its not unheard of to have can-am weekends with 13k people or so wandering about.

the management at whiteface turned down our race proposal earlier today[8-12-05].
sorry for the bad news.
i may still have a film and labor day weekend specials.
maybe everyone should just show up and race each other, kinda keep unofficial times.
