I just picked up a 2004 SGS downhill frame but have a few questions.

What do these ride like with a 888 on them? Do you need to get the lowered clamps or is it a personal preference thing?

The frame is a medium with a manitou 6 way shock and a 400 coil. What spring are people using for a 180 pound rider including gear?

Low clamps are a personal preference and they work great with 888's

I'm using a 350 lb spring if I remember correctly, I'll look again tonight. But I'm now running a DHX shock (one of the best upgrades I have done to my SGS)

I had a 350 on my SGS last year(5th element) It came stock with a 400 and it was way to stiff I am about 190 with all my gear.

I would get a set of clamps to lower it for sure, I had a 04 boxxer and it was just right

i weigh 190 with gear, run the stock spring 400lb
swinger 4way:100 psi and the bottom out adjuster at 2.5 turns and preload 14 turns from the top is this generally right? i kinda ballparked it with Todd's advice (but with a 5th)

does the dhx come with a Ti spring? how much lighter is it and how pricey?

Ok here's the setup I used for the first 2 days and comments/questions.

Current Setup:
400 spring
80 psi
1/4 way out on the chamber
minimum fast and slow compression
rebound 6 clicks from max
preload just a turn or so more than enough to hold the shock in.
The sag seems ok at about 3/4 of an inch, eye to eye change.

I weigh 170 without gear, maybe 180 with gear (no pack).

Impressions - The bottom of the shock was upside down (came installed like that) and has been hitting the linkage. The shock felt like it bottomed a few times, not harsh but this may have been the rebound knob hitting the linkage.
When sitting down at the end of the day over the water bars at Diablo the rear would bounce up once before settling down. When popping off small mounds the bike could become very light at the front.
Rear bushing has come loose after 2 days enough so you can lift the frame and feel a 'click' as it moves - is this normal after 2 days or maybe caused by the bottoming?

I am looking to run a plush setup for non racing downhill including drops up to 8-10ft with transitions.

Should I change to a 350 spring? Run less air and turn up the compression dampening, or rely on the air for the compression?

thanks for any help.
