I know using a fill flash probably would help balance light out, but are there any tricks to I can do without a flash?

Here are some examples from this weekend.

A really bad example (shot of me)

sometimes there is nothing you can do but wait for (or create) better light.

it's tough... the best thing you can do is try to get closer... you did a nice job of lighting them w/ the streams of sunlight through the trees...

good job regardless.

Thanks guys. I took a few more shots about an hour later and the light was a bit better. I haven't really spent anytime playing with color in the shots. They are too yellow for my tastes.

You could always just stop down a tiny bit.

the problem with simply stopping down is that you're still going to have a lot of contrast, it'll just be darker. Toshi got it right, your option is to wait for better light or make it yourself. in most mountain bike situations you can't do the latter so you're stuck with the former. as a rule of thumb: never shoot photos at noon Wink
