After reading A LOT about each model and it's pros and cons I've made a shortlist consisting of the Canon 20D and the 350D.
After seeing many kits with both cameras, my budget allows for one of this options:
- 20D + kit lenses (EF-S 18-55);
I really like the feel of this camera, and the ergonomics. I'd be stuck with this lens until the end of the year though.
- 350D + battery grip + EF-S 17-85 IS;
I won't need the battery grip for anything but to help balance with longer lenses, which I'd not get immediately anyway... Another thing that bugs me is that this lens seems to get mixed reviews concerning it's quality - Great walk around lenses but with not-quite fabulous optics.
This would stretch my budget just a little... On the other hand I'd have a pretty good tele from the start. I don't know if I'm going to get a comfortable grip with the 350D and a long lens though...
For all of them I'll buy an UV filter, polarizer and Lowepro bag (well, I might be too stretched out with the last kit to buy a decent uv filter and polarizer...).
I'll be using the camera for about 65% Landscape and architecture,
25% sports (MTB and BMX mostly), and the other 10% for macro, portraits, IR experimenting, etc. (Here's the link for some of my photos until now: http://kidcabide.deviantart.com/gallery/ )
When shooting sports, is the difference between the 5fps of the 20d and the 3fps of the 350d noticeable, i.e. do you use the continuous shooting mode when shooting sports? What other differences do you see in these two cameras regarding action shots?
So, what to do?
PS - The Nikon D70 was part of this shortlist, but the Portuguese importer informed me that I'd not be covered by any warranty if I bought the camera in anywhere else but Portugal (and since the D70 costs around US$1900 with the 18-70... it's a no go). The Canons come with an international warranty certificate, so I'm going to go with one of those.

the 350D will be just fine without the grip. your left hand supports longer lenses, and when on the tripod you'll use a tripod collar on the lens rather than on the body. the 70-200/4 is a light lens in any case.
i would go for option 3 if you can spring it and don't mind the control layout of the Rebel (as in lack of the wheel on the back).

Toshi, thanks for your answer.
I saw in previous threads that you have a 20D. Do you use the 5fps when shooting sports?
I've handled both the 20D and 350D and although the 20D felt better, I know that I could easily adapt to the 350d. My main concern is that I'd miss the 5fps and the supposedly faster AF/better tracking on the 20D...
And as for the 70-200 F4, is it fast enough for sports? (I was thinking of, in time build a set with a 10-20 wide sigma or canon, a f2.8 28-75 tamron and this 70-200 F4).

sorry, i didn't see this reply.
yes, i use 5 fps when shooting sports, and even stuff like karaoke (see below). the 70-200/4 would be fast enough for shooting in daylight, but not under the lights or at dusk. for that you really have to pony up for the 2.8, or, better yet, the 135 f/2L or the 200 f/1.8L. i have the 135, and in fact used that lens for the whole gallery that the karaoke image is from.
