I don't give a shit about anything else that will come out this year. They might as well give away all the awards now.

You've all had several hours. You should own Total by now. If you don't, I seriously don't have anything to say to you.

Interesting bump.
I think Sufjan Steven's "Greetings from Michigan" has to have knocked the Tortoise and Bjork album out of my top 5. I love that album SO much.
Dungen's "Ta det lungt" is also worth a 2004 mention.
McGrupp...with a name like that, I bet I can find plenty you'd like.

i somehow managed to get a copy of Dungen's 1st lp (must have been the unhinged ravings of Ed in his Eclipse Records weekly email updates), but haven't really listened to much of it.
yesterday i got the 3lp _By the Fruits, you shall know the Roots_ set...this is gonna be big. as big as _Killing Capitalism w/ Kindess_ or _The Harmony of the Spheres_ 3lp sets were...

they specifically capture an aethestic (local scene, shared vision, etc) so completely and effortlessly that each is a bona fide piece of art. to wit:
killing capitalism w/ kindness is a broad, sweeping essay on the xpressway label and kindred spirits which was forged by bruce russell of the dead c. pretty much all NZ stuff from the early 90s.
harmony of the spheres was also heavily NZ swayed, but really focused on modern experiemental psych music, w/ guitar as it's target and favored means of expression. titans such as roy montgomery, charalambides, loren connors, bardo pond, etc each have a slab of loving black plastic to call their own, and stretch out as they like.
the original 3lp set was a thing of breathaking beauty, but it's also available on lifeless cd.
the new one is an attempt to distill and capture the essence of the new america freak scene (acid folk, hippie picking, whatever tag you wanna apply). here's a blurb direct from the site:
VARIOUS ARTIST “BY THE FRUITS YOU SHALL KNOW THE ROOTS” 3lp (ECLIPSE/TIME-LAG 020-022)
at long last this spilt label, triple lp monster is unleashed... a hexagonal wonderama of otherworldly sides from some of the most brilliant musicians/groups working in the underground psychedelic folk/blues realm, elegantly dressed in a 2 sided 6 panel foldout poster of bacchanalian design. a fabulous document of tone and album art containing some of the best exploratory compositions captured in beautiful fidelity... featuring a full lp side each from: SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE, JACK ROSE, MATT VALENTINE & ERIKA ELDER with CHRIS CORSANO, DREDD FOOLE, FURSAXA, and JOSHUA with KEMIALLSET YSTĂVĂT... packaged in a full color, fabric textured, triple gatefold cover, that unfolds to reveal a huge 25" by 37" poster. mind seed planted by ben chasny, cover art and design by erika elder, label artwork by joshua burkett, poster art by nemo, fable by matt valentine, and printed by clint simonson of destijl. limited edition of 1000 copies. $32.00
Flames make everything faster, stronger, and better.

it should be illegal for an indie/emo website to have a name called pitchfork.
