Anybody seen it yet? I thought it was alright, I didn't agree with Eminem's Lose Yourself because that song isnt one of his best, but thats one of the few I actually disagreed with. Takes awhile to read through.

500 songs, right? So, are you saying that an Eminem song made it into Rolling Stone's Top 500 songs of all time? REALLY?

Yes, two in fact. And NWA's f**k tha police, 2pac and Dre's California Love and Dre's Nothin but a G thang. Stan was the other Eminem song. I think he deserves a spot, but a lot of people will disagree. I think The Doors House of the Rising Sun should have been in there tho.

Whose top 500? Certainly wasn't mine.
That magazine sucks...so many songs that should've made it, didn't...and vice versa.

www.rollingstone.com has the whole list. A bunch of people voted, I think 200 or so. It was all people involved in music, I think Ozzy was in there, Elvis Costello, Kurt Loder (lol).

Interesting. Smells Like Teen Spirit is #9? Hmm....
I think Express Yourself is a better song than f**k the Police, but I don't think NWA could take credit for what's great about that track.

what a steaming hunk of shit.
you're gonna tell me that 5 drifters songs, "do ya think i'm sexy", "beast of burden", "the loco-motion", blah blah blah are better than the velvet's "sister ray"?
eat a dick, rolling stone.

The Doors did not write House of the Rising Sun, therefore they should not win anything for it.
Covers just plain don't count.
I didn't read the article, because I know it is entirely meaningless and will probably just piss me off, but I thought I'd point that out.
wait... I dont even remember the doors covering house of the rising sun! In fact no way... they never did.
house of the rising sun was done by the animals, not the doors

hey narlus, could you come up with, say, a top 50 list and post it here? i'm currently trying to d/l as much of the rolling stone 500 as i can, since i pretty much missed out on the whole "listening to popular music" deal while growing up.

i could try but i think it's an exercise in futility. i would probably miss many obvious ones.
edit - note that these lists tend to be a bit more elitist and ignore some mainstream stuff which a lot of people dig. so just use it as a guide. if you've got specific questions about anything in particular ask away and i'l see if i know anything about the particular record.

Those are some great resources, man. Even if you don't agree with the songs they chose, the artisits are varied enough to really give you a taste of the generation, if you bother to go find other songs by them....

too bad they didn't do the 1960s...from the early part of the decade sucked (well, i just don't like that kind of music), but from say '66 onward, there were a lot of great records coming out.

how about we rename the list:
"500 mainly rock tunes selected by white american males aged 30-60 who are pretty much into rock"
You'll notice an almost complete lack of international representation.
but again, they create these lists to cause controversy, get people talking & sell magazines. I don't think anyone's that really knows their music would take this list for anything more than that.
