I really wanted to like Porcupine Tree. I wanted a young, NOT cheesy prog band, but I found In Absentia to be pretty cheesy. However, it is a really good "sounding" album. It obviously was not mixed for radio play.

I don't know, I really like it. Blackest Eyes is such a good song.
One wierd thing about them, is I heard all their music, then looked at their website and video and stuff, and their music is SO much happier than the video and pictures. They are pretty brutal. It was like a wierd little identity crisis for me.
I love porcupine tree. Before I downloaded any of their music, someone gave me their website, and it looked like it was going to be hard, gothic typed music* no offense meant to anyone * Anyways, it's really good stuff.

They're ok, but nothing breathtaking. I could only listen to the same song by them for a few times before getting sick of it.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but has anyone heard anything other than in absentia. i just got stars die:the delirium years and it is one of the most unique and varied albums i have. it goes from pinkfloyd like rock to trance to some heavier stuff. its really quite fantastic.

I downloaded an album called Voyage 34: The Complete Trip, and it was pretty interesting. Supposedly the band took acid before doing this recording. It is not, I repeat, NOT, good music for tripping to though. I couldn't listen to it for more than a few minutes until being totally weirded out.
There's another album called Up the Downstair that is pretty good too. It's a little more down to earth than the other one I mentioned.

i don't think they did acid before that album. for one thing that was recorded and written by one person. second, the guy who wrote it (steve wilson) doesn't believe in using drugs to boost creativity (that's what he says not my explination). i really like the song voyage 34 phase one from that album. the only albums i have are in absentia and stars die: the delirium years (a greatest hits sort of album that is two discs) mostly since i haven't been able to find any others sold locally. i buy them as i find them.

that's kinda what i thought too. most bands of that vein (not including progressive metal) that i like are really into the drug scene and here is one that isn't.
p.s. you only gave it one listen? i never do that with cds now. most bands i end up really liking need a couple.

Sure, me too...but it was obvious instantly that I'd never listen to it again. Some stuff grows on me, but some stuff I plain don't like.

For the record, PT has ungrown on me.
I still think Blackest Eyes is a cool song, but overall its too simplistic and relies too much on sound and not enough on content.

Could you elaborate on that statement? I have no idea what it means.

It means that Steve Wilson (who I actually respect for his work with other groups), relies too much on atmosphere and the way things sound, and not enough on interesting chords, melodies, and harmonies. Fair enough the band has its moments, but it just isn't enough for me.
For me, sound and atmosphere etc etc are things you think about after you've written a great song.
...But what do I know? I happen to be cursed with being the son of a music teacher, so I was exposed to a lot of different music at an early age. Thank that I have pretty odd tastes in music.
