shot 1: 1/50, f/4, iso 200, -1 ec, -0.66 more when converting.
shot 2: 1/800, f/2.5, iso 200, -1 ec, +0.33 when converting.
shot 3: 1/100, f/4, iso 1600 (!), 0 ec, -0.66 when converting. built in flash.
noise is not bad for iso 1600 eh? sorry about the too-low shutter speed on the first one, otherwise the crop would look cleaner.
earlier mind-dribble: startup is really quick! the shutter is loud. 5 fps feels fast. control layout has changed quite a bit between the D30 and the 20D. being able to zoom in increments on the image review is nice, as is selecting focus points via the joystick-type thing. it feels solid, a lot like your 10D keith. the rubber on the handgrip is nice.

that i did. i shot a D30 for about 18 months, then it broke in august. i jumped on a 20D waiting list shortly thereafter and it finally showed up on tuesday.

I just got my 20d yesterday...havent field tested it yet, mainly some quick shots around work.....the main things i noticed right off the bat were the quick startup, the speed of the autofocus and of course the 5fps...i was a happy 10d owner, but i definately could not pass up this upgrade considering the very useful 5fps. Not to mention, i already had my 10d sold...
Next purchase is wireless flash...anyone have suggestions?

pocket wizards are the pro choice. the semi-pro choice is the canon st-e2, but the range is limited on it and it's not (much? at all?) cheaper...

There is one big gotcha with PWs..1 ETTL Flash does not work so brush up on your manual flash skillz...
the St-e2 is sweet IF you are within line-of-site with the sensors.
If you have a big white lens (70-200 2.8 or 300) and you're shooting vertical you have to really hold the camera to the side where the unit can see the remote flashes. example: remote flash is on the left side of subject..then you can shoot vert using the vert grip buttons(buttons are on top)..if the remote flash is right side of subject then you have to flip 180 and the vert buttons are underneath making u use the body buttons.
So the 20D has some of the advantages of my D70, quick turn on, fast AF. I don't have 5 fps though Just 3 which is ok for me.
I just got a Nikon SB-800 flash with built in wireless for remote flashes.. One day I'll get a SB-600 or two to trigger.

ah, i didn't know that e-ttl didn't work with pocket wizards, good to know. i agree about the slight inconvenience of having to rotate the "wrong" way to have the st-e2 be in the line of sight -- it even happens to me with my small, black 135/2 and (sigma) 180 macro, heh
taz, the 20D also has lower noise and a bigger file. the sb-800 is kind of like the st-e2. more accurately it's like a 550ex or 580ex, and the st-e2 is like the 550ex only without the flash part

Ya, the D70 is very quite for me. The AF is almost silent.
It's 8.1 mpxl right? the 20d?

oh, taz, i'm talking about image noise at high isos, the color noise and "speckling". the aural noise is actually quite high, as this new 5 fps shutter clicks and clacks away. 20D is 8.2 megapixels.
see the left/background part of this 100% crop, for instance:
that's iso 1600...

I admit I'm still learning a lot on my camera... So much I have no idea what it does I am shooting almost 100% manual though trying to learn more. But getting the flash threw in another wad of stuff to learn hehe

a real test, some iso 3200 (upper limit on the 20D) images;
image 1 and 2: iso 3200 (!), 1/50, f/2.8
image 3: iso 1600, 1/60, f/2.0
my thoughts: altho somewhat startling at first when you view the 100%, no nr crops, the iso 3200 shots look as good as my D30's iso 800 shots. considering that the 20D has 2.5 times the number of pixels as the D30 i am very pleased, as that makes the difference is far greater than "just" 2 stops.

those 3200 shots are just slightly off par for 800 film shots. i'm really impressed. now, all i need is $1500 to fall out of the sky........yeah right

Looking really good! looks like the big C has another winnah on it's hands here for sure. I'm especially impressed with the ISO 800+ shots, results I could only dream about with my D1x..even when it was new . I know a high end mountian bike shooter that recently traded in the black for white....waiting to hear from him on some in-the-field torture tests

I am in the process of thinning out all of my Nikon stuff...actually going to make the switch to Canon, because of the 20D. That is just an exceptional camera.
