So the other day i go to start my truck- a 1998 S-10 with the 2.2 liter four cylinder. The starter turns and the engine sounds like its gonna crank, but it doesnt. The battery gauge shows that the battery is a little low, so my dad and i go out later and try to jump it to see if thats the problem. We hook his Millenia S up, and try to start it again, but no dice. So i go to autozone, and i buy one of the Haynes manuals to see what it might be. Turns out there are like 8 different possibilities, from the fuel pump to distrubutor, to the ECU. Now im 18, and not a mechanic(as much as i like to monkey with my truck), so im kind of fucked. If it was any of those items i mentioned, it seems kind of odd, seeing as the truck is only 6 years old, and has lower mileage(only 61k). If anyone has any experience with this, and can provide some kind of valuble advice besides beat up/sell/total the truck and file for insurance, then it would be appreciated. Until then, ill sit on my ass and will have to settle for my mothers subaru wagon.

if its cranking over, then its more likely fuel than battery...
truck needs 2 things to run fuel and spark, and if its tryin to crank then it has some spark...

Yeah we think its probably a problem with fuel delivery. This sucks because it means A) dropping the fuel tank to take out and test/replace the fuel pump B) getting the injectors serviced. Both of these are a pain in the ass, and a fuel pump could be as much as 400.00 to replace. Worst case scenario, we test both these things, and they dont fix it, which would put us right back where we started from.

Diagnosis is the hard part. Replacing components is easy and the generally aren't that expensive when considering paying someone to put it in for you. You've got a book, read it.
I transplanted an engine from one car to another for my first car using two books and my dads, not extensive but not entirely lacking toolset. I was 17.
edit: start replacing the cheapest components first.

Check the fuel pump relays. If theyre bad, replace them. No dice? Check the fuel filter, could be clogged. Nothing? Could be the fuel pump. First do a spark test. If you have spark, take a plug out, crank it over a few times, then take the plug out. Is it covered in fuel? If not then chances are its your fuel pump. Get ready to start growing money, theyre not cheap.

I replaced the fuel filter- a task easier said then done when you have a fat head and no lift or floor jack. It wasnt the problem, as the truck still wont start. I did notice that the gas that came out of the old filter was black-im not sure if this was normal or not, but i guess it means the filter was doing its job. I guess im gonna have to try other options.

I made a mistake on my spark test description.
Do this: Pull the spark plug out, clean it off. Put it back in, crank the engine over, then pull it out again. If its covered in gas, then you have gas going to the cylenders.
